They arranged a wine tasting for us complete with canapés. It seemed like a good thing to do in the middle of the day when it’s so hot because their wine cave is nice and chilly! Most were South African wines. The table was about 18 inches below the high seat so we put pillows on the floor.
They really liked our adaptation and said they might set other guests up this way. It also inspired them to tell us they do a Moroccan dinner where they set everything up in a circle and you sit down on pillows on the beach. Since they are having enough difficulty with basics I think we should skip that one.
We learned that red wine goes with beef.
Oh, come on, Mike- we learned a lot more than that! First you look at the wine for color. Then you sniff it. Then you taste it.
One bottle he couldn’t get the cork out of. Understandable as that happens occasionally to us. Another he poured us was so corky I had to point it out to him and he agreed and said they would send the entire crate to the kitchen for them to cook with.
We found a bottle of rose we liked so we took it out to west beach for pizza.
They have a wood burning oven. The pizza was pretty good. The view was much better than New Haven or New Jersey.
Either the bartender at West Beach needs glasses or someone needs to clean the sunscreen of their phone lens.
They made us an interesting non alcoholic drink that was super delicious! Three different fruits all grown on island and no added extra sugar. We got the star fruit part and the strawberries but darned if we could understand what the other fruit was. But it was very hydrating and I’m sure the bartender thought that would be a plus to us.
The day ended with chef substituting fish and octopus for chicken and tofu in the curry dinner Mike requested.

Overall we had a lovely day in spite of the miscommunications. Tomorrow at 6:30 our villa host Tariq is taking us to where the staff quarters are because that’s where all the birds hang out. That may be comical as well - one of the employees was telling us about a white bird with a long tail. We asked was it the flycatcher. He told us yes. We were very excited- until we realized it is the long tailed tropic bird we have seen many times and there is no white flycatcher here.
